Pavel Kornev

Pavel Kornev is a successful author of speculative fiction whose writing crosses the boundaries of the thriller, LitRPG and fantasy adventure. Genre mashing has long become his signature style.

“His books are a page-turning mix of non-stop action and edge-of-the-seat suspense. Far from being a knight on a white charger, Kornev’s typical protagonist is an everyday man with his fair share of flaws who puts his talents to good use. His heroes struggle to survive and win their places in the sun; but most importantly, they manage to preserve their humanity even in the direst of circumstances.”

Pavel is a professional economist who spent years working for a large bank – until his first novel, The Ice, became an overnight bestseller, allowing him to quit his day job. In his spare time Pavel jogs, swims and is an avid beer brewer.

In this world, science took the place of magic. Meanwhile, the transition from the era of steam to the epoch of Sublime Electricity is already underway. But magic hasn't simply disappeared without a trace. It still exists, concealed in the blood of the illustrious.

Virtual worlds are places of boundless freedom. Anyone can become an elven mage or an invisible rogue, join a clan and go on raids, fight, develop their characters and most importantly, escape from the daily grind.

However, a game is only a game if you can quit. This is something I learned the hard way. I just wanted to let off some steam in virtual reality and ended up getting murdered and imprisoned in the body of one of the undead—slow, clumsy and cursed to die at the hand of other players over and over again.

The only way out of this awful predicament was to find the legendary Scroll of Rebirth, but the helpless plague-ridden corpse would need to be turned into a real killing machine. If only people knew what it was like to level up a dead rogue...

I used to be... well... nobody at all. A poor street dweller, one of the many vagrants of The Rothouse. By the standards of any ordinary, respectable citizen, I was a rat like any other, while for the bureaucrats, the merchants or, even more so, the secret-keepers, I was simply invisible—an empty space and nothing more. To hell with them all!

I could have been one of them! I had the means, I had the ambition and, most importantly, I had someone by my side, someone for whom I would have moved mountains. But someone else decided that Gray had squandered enough of their precious oxygen; that Gray had taken the final step along his path; and that was that.

It had all been for nothing! But I managed to writhe my way out of death's cold embrace and come out stronger than ever, having ignited within me the blinding white flame of witchcraft. I often recall how an old witch once told me: "He who takes what is not his will lose what is", and I have always tried to live by those words. But now? Well...

We'll soon see what's mine!
